1.
got my finger on the big red button pressed down, waiting for the earth to open best years wasted on a climb to nothing I held on tight and it pulled me down and I've been dragged so far, it's wearing down my feet I did everything right boots strapped up real tight, but I don't feel so free they said, "what you're worth is what you make." price check: guess it isn't too surprising I'm marked down ear to the wall -- just listen gear teeth humming 'till I'm ground to nothing the third act drags, but I leave such a beautiful mess
2.
every past mistake still takes up space and swallows every look that runs across your face shards in your eyes -- I can't think of a better way and I don't dare to try Oh, I turn your hang-ups into sticks & stones then break apart my bones it'll be alright, I'll be alright there's no voice of reason to be found got a hit parade of breakdowns pulling us around talking in code, I can't keep up the front today but I won't let you know I turn my hang-ups into sticks & stones just don't leave me alone it'll be alright, I'll be alright
3.
I'm pinning my hopes on what I can't see I'm picking through the trash and digging up the weeds there's not enough that's worth a shit to me but here we go again, let's all count back from 3... ...2, 1 here it is, a shard of what I might be made of or a made-up memory I keep the frequencies down the lower end (not the bottom?) I can't hear you and I'm not listening the phrase means nothing to me I hold my temperature steady it isn't much, but it's something white knuckles, melodrama, and load of bad feelings to feed 'cause if I can't find meaning in something simple then maybe it's just as bad as we thought maybe it's chemicals and math maybe it's one more lie that we bought or maybe we'll make someone feel not so alone
4.
my favorite enemy plays a slow guitar, slung low the pills I take don't let him hit too hard place to sleep for half a week, half a tank in the car you can't fix anything when you don't know who you are fell asleep I had enough for today my head just gets in the way and I'm blind with spite for you your pit trap memory, your chemical release I've been showing you the door, but you're never gonna leave still ashamed, and I won't pretend I made my peace with every wasted day you had a hook in me across the stream I hide the rest of my days hand don't cover my face will you find me out?
5.
feeling like a nickel, got a speed bump in my brain got a pill for everything in my cigarette cellophane came down hard, found myself a familiar place can't remember much more than the look on the nurse's face two years on, I took a hammer to the crack and I don't see how I can ever get it back went looking for a sign in the bar's back alleyway I thought about an old song, back seat, '88 the signal blew by, about a half step out of range and the meter counted down another drug store promenade hang it up, I tried the timeline's at least symmetric(al) you're an angel, kid now get me one more pill
6.
"you don't have to be sober, but this won't happen again" those dead leaves in the yard you cut a perfect path right through them friends don't come cheap, and I'm too broke to maintain it you're wishing that you never called you said, "I can't help you at all." I'm spending more than I'm making just to seem like I'm alright I bite down 'till I'm bleeding I ignore it 'till I get it right broke a fuse board is shot to shit, I caught it much too late I'm used I'm just scrapped for parts, there's nothing left to take I filed down my teeth so sharp, the skin's just pulling away I take it on my own
7.
don't ever change the way you are (the way you are) you'll feel everything the way you are (the way you are) don't ever let them tell you you took it way too far 'cause it's cold outside, and you burn bright 'neath winter stars so don't ever change the way you are (the way you are) have no regrets while tracing over all your scars 'cause there's beauty in the way you are (the way you are) I need you, my friend, the way you are (the way you are)
